The Templars: The History and the Myth

“When it was over, the knights went ‘rejoicing and weeping’ to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to give thanks to God at the site of the death and resurrection of Jesus.”

The Templar Knights were founded on Christmas Day of 1119. They were a religious order of fighting knights who swore to defend the Holy Land and all Christian pilgrims in the period after the First Crusade.

After so many decades of renown bravery—as well as becoming one of the wealthiest groups in the medieval world—they were suddenly condemned for heresy and their leaders burned at the stake. Why?

Michael Haag brings to light much of the history that is shrouded in mystery. Surely a controversial subject, he manages to show us the origins and histories of these myths of the Knights Templar.

These legendary pauper knights have become such an influence in world history they can literally be found everywhere. Whether it is books or movies, video games or political conspiracies, they have a bit of everything.

There are some times when I just love a good history book—but not a textbook. When an author can turn history into a story and make the characters come alive, you know he or she is a true historian. That’s what Michael Haag is. It’s no wonder this is a bestseller. The Knights Templar—though I may not hold the same personal beliefs as they did—became fascinating and misunderstood characters in a play staged by world powers bigger than their own.

I actually found myself shedding a tear or two when the gavel announced their punishments of death.

“It’s funny what you hold on to, the things you remember when everything ends.” –Kahlen

She almost died in a shipwreck, the Ocean saved her. To pay the Ocean back, Kahlen must live the life of a Siren. One word from her mouth kills people—it’s the most enchanting music to their ears and they feel an undeniable urge to cast themselves into the Ocean.

But Kahlen enjoys spending time on land with people. Even though she can’t talk to them, she’s still able to listen and watch.

Then Akinli shows up. Sweet, handsome, nearly perfect in every way, he forges a connection with her and will not deny it. Even though she can’t talk to him, he seems to understand her thoughts and feelings.

But to love a human is against the rules of the Ocean—naturally.

Will Kahlen be able to follow her heart and break those rules? What happens to a Siren who turns against her calling?

the siren kiera cass

Not exactly a mermaid book, these folk have legs, but the Siren is an amazing story about a girl with a secret. I found myself wishing I could just wrap my arms around Kahlen and tell her it would all be all right. Even after she loses her family but gains a new one, after she struggles for almost a century over having to kill so many people because the Ocean commands her to, after she meets Akinli and is tortured in her soul because she can’t speak her feelings to him.

But love can cross any Ocean. I loved watching how it all worked out. The intensity was sweet. Kiera Cass does an amazing job as always. Most seem to know her by her Selection series—and most who read those and enjoyed them, have complimented this work as well. As of the writing of this review, I’ve only read the first book of the Selection series. It’s good, but I find the Siren more up my alley.

“He always managed to pick her out of the crowd, though she didn’t always have blond hair. Or green eyes. Or that height. Or that color skin. It was bewitching.” –Maurice

It’s a different take on the famous Disney fair tale. Belle is a captive of the angry, terrifying beast. She longs to see the world as always. But when she touches the enchanted rose, visions flood her brain. Belle sees her mother—someone she thought she’d never ever see again.

What’s more disturbing, she figures out her mother was actually the Enchantress who cursed the Beast and his castle and all the servants. Confused, bewildered, shocked beyond belief, Bell and the Beast must come to terms with something.

They need to work together to unravel this dark mystery. What truly happened twenty-one years ago? How are their families tied together?

Another Beauty and the Beast unique telling that is a favourite of mine. I enjoyed the strange new mystery unfolding before my eyes as I read each forthcoming chapter.

I could feel Belle’s surprise when she discovered the identity of the Enchantress. Though closely similar to the original Disney story, it is yet different to the point I could see a whole new movie being made from it. Although, I’d say, this book is even better than the movie and I love the movie—both animated and live-action now!

If you like fairy tales with a dark fantasy twist, this is a great weekend read for you.

“And until then, she would take comfort in books. Just as she always had.” –Belle

Belle, bookish and brilliant, is trapped. A prisoner in the Beast’s castle, she is forced to busy herself in all the chores required of her. But she also gets to explore the extensive library the Beast has given to her.

Happening upon an enchanted book called Nevermore, she finds herself drawn into its pages—and I don’t mean like reading a good book kind of “drawn into” but actually drawn into. Inside is a fantastic, mesmerising, happy world governed by a queen.

Meeting all the jovial characters, Belle finds that her dreams of living a happy-go-lucky, blissful, ball-filled life might actually be just in reach. But can the world inside Nevermore be real? Or is there something dark and malevolent beneath its surface?

Beauty and the Beast has got to be listed as my favourite Disney fairy tale. So naturally I would want any book related to the story. When I came across this, the cover “drew me in.” I was delighted to find, yes it was in the Beauty and the Beast world, but it was unique in its own way. There are some intense scenes that grip you in suspense.

All throughout this fantasy Disney tale, you feel Belle’s excitement when she gets to explore the world—but you also have this gut-wrenching sense that there is absolutely something wrong. At least, that’s what I felt. I had to keep reading to find out what was up the Queen’s sleeve. Why did she take a liking to Belle so deeply?

Wolf’s Rising

“Opening his eyes, it took a moment for them to adjust to the darkness. When they finally did, he noted he was kneeling on the floor, his hands hanging from chains above his head, in the corner of a wide dungeon prison cell.” –Duncan

Duncan Hur is a prisoner, but he doesn’t remember why. Then a woman is thrown into his prison by a Dark Elf. Turns out, he knows her—in fact, they’re in love. The two of them manage to escape the cell and venture into the Elven castle while Duncan slowly remembers who he is.

He’s a leader of a slave uprising. The werewolves have been slaves to the Dark Elves for a thousand years—but now they’re finally in rebellion.

Will Duncan and his friends be able to free their people once and for all? Oh, and who is the Shade who takes on physical form and unleashes evil forces from the Otherworld? Is it a good idea to unite the Wolf-Born with the Dark Elves against this new common enemy?

wolf's rising john irvin

I must say, Wolf’s Rising is a favourite of mine—don’t tell the other books. All my books are my children and they are all my favourites. Each one is a piece of me. But Wolf’s Rising is one of those that share a special shelf in the favourites hall in my heart.

I like how it is set in a totally other world and the mentions of past events gives me this sense that there is a rich history we don’t know about—even I don’t, being the writer. My characters surprised me a couple times. I didn’t know at first that Duncan would reach for that cursed gem and shift to the Otherworld.

The several friends who’ve read this work already have all said it’s one of their favourites too. So, I mean, that’s always good news in an author’s ears.

Bloodrose (Book 3 in the Nightshade Trilogy)

” Love wasn’t forged by circumstance or changed by sorrow. It simply was. Fierce and free as the wolf within me.” –Calla

International-bestselling author Andrea Cremer does not disappoint again in this final book of the Nightshade trilogy.

Calla is thrust into the last battle. There is naturally much more at stake. Should she save Ren against Shay’s wishes? She’s also got to prove she is the Alpha of her pack. And Ansel? He’s been branded a traitor but she wants to keep him safe.

There are plenty of new twists in this awesomely-dark conclusion.

Can Shay defeat Bosque Mar? What role does the Elemental Cross have?

Also, there’s a huge sacrifice needed to take place in order for victory to be won. Can Call, Shay, Sabine, and the others do it?

The ending kinda took me by surprise, but I did close the book with a satisfied smile and tear in my eye. But, that’s hint enough.

This dark fantasy is an inspiring finish to an amazing work! Some may say they wished it could be a bit different, but I approved of how it all worked out. That’s just like life—it may not go as you planned or hoped, but sometimes it ends up being better than you planned.
